The year is 1955. The place, Burbank, California and the Walt Disney Studios. The scene is producer Bill Walsh's office where he has just handed Jackson Gillis (AUG. 21, 1916 - AUG. 19, 2010) a copy of Lawrence Edward Watkin's book "Marty Markham" and is telling him to create a television series based on that story. As with most things Walt Disney undertook, this project was up against a short deadline from the get go. A casting call had been set for April with screen tests to quickly follow. Actual filming was scheduled to begin on June 28th at one of four locations all 25 - 30 plus miles distant from the Disney studios. In his book, Company Of Heroes, Harry Carey Jr., who played the part of Mr. Burnett the counselor, recalls the start being July 12th and well he should remember that date for it set him at odds with his favorite director, John Ford. Shooting was wrapped up on September 3rd. Everyone at the studios was in some way working on a new television program designed for and aimed squarely at kids. A revolutionary new idea in kids after school television compared to the run of the mill repeat cartoon shows then being aired. A step, a giant step, above the "kiddie" shows which spanned the time slots between the "soaps" and the evening news. All Gillis has to do is convert this story of Martin Markham and a group of boys at a dude ranch into twenty-five, eleven minute long episodes, and do it in a way that will be both entertaining and attention grabbing to the average American ten year old. In the meantime, Bill Walsh must select the actors and filming locations. It's said that Walt Disney himself chose the Golden Oak Ranch, a working horse ranch used since the early 1930's as a movie location, for the site of the Triple-R Ranch. The art department has been busy since 1954 creating a logo for the mythical ranch, the costume department has been busy creating distinctive yet simple costumes of t-shirts, cowboy hats and belt buckles while the marketing people have been busy licensing manufacture of items for sale. All that remains is for Mr. Gillis to complete the scripts........ |
